...Because Most Days I'm Still Amazed

My husband, Paul, graduated from Lyndon State College in 1988 and from there went on to graduate from Penn State University and soon after found himself employed with a company that worked in Antarctica part of the year.  Through all of this he spoke often of  wanting to return to Vermont. After a few years of traveling between Denver and Antarctica Paul applied for a position in Lyndonville in hopes of bringing his family to Vermont.

As for me, I was born and raised in Colorado and never thought home could be anywhere outside of Denver! When Paul was offered a position in Vermont I decided to leave the city behind and give the country a chance.  Little did I know, the unique experience of living in Burke would embed itself into my heart causing Vermont to become my true home.  Now I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

In 1999 Paul and I left the city life behind and moved to Burke to raise our children in a place which boasted the beauty of both community and the outdoors.  We never looked back.

We have three children, Ashleigh, Colten and Quintin.  As kids they spoke of the time when each would be old enough to move to a “big city”. Two of the three moved to the big city when they graduated high school…. and …. two of three moved back! The youngest will graduate high school soon and have his own chance at it.

It’s been 14 years now and those who know us would agree that hosting gatherings and a good meal are definitely two things we Love. This past spring of 2013 we sold our Burke home and purchased a beautiful piece of property on Stannard Mountain and with that The Wheelock Way came to be – A place to feel the breath-taking beauty of Vermont while reenergizing yourself via fun times and food!

Chances are if you’re reading this it’s because you are longing to connect with the beauty of the outdoors while seeking to relax and reenergize.  The Wheelock Way is just the place to help youaccomplish all of that!

Together, our family welcomes you!

“Dearest Audrey,

Thank you so much for letting us stay at your cottage! Spending our 4th anniversary here was absolutely amazing. Your cottage was our home away from home, and leaving this place was definitely hard for us…we loved it here! When we first stepped inside the cottage, we did have a moment of just imagining what our first house together would be like…it was truly a sacred moment for us all because of how special this cottage is! Of course, we did not forget how wonderful you were to us as our hostess! I will never forget how we connected so well when we first met you…loved your vibe and kindness…you are such a lovely person! For making our week long vacation comfortable and unforgettable, we thank you with all of our hearts!! We hope your next guests find peace, fresh air and comfort as we did! By the way, thank you for suggesting we check out the night sky and for using the fire pit…it was a real treat and a beautiful ending to our stay here! We even saw a shooting star over the house! Once again, thank you for EVERYTHING! We already look forward to returning to your cabin when we travel to Vermont in the near future. Please enjoy the wine as a token of our gratitude.”  (NY)

"Audreys cottage is perfect for people trying to run away from routine life and have a relaxed vacation.Audrey is such a wonderful host. She paid attention to our every need. Was available all time.Loved staying at the cottage and will 100% recommend to people .The location, the option to make fire at night, wake up to a beautiful morning scene ......i am running out of words to express how rejunevating this stay was for me and my husband. THANK YOU Audrey !!!"

August 2016

"Absolutely Incredible! Our stay was wonderful and we definitely plan on staying again. Audrey was so accommodating, I mean I haven't been anywhere else where they'll cook you homemade meals and all you have to do is heat it up when you're ready. It was secluded like we wanted yet only 10 minutes to town. We have never been so satisfied."

"Beautiful cottage! Loved everything from the fully equipped kitchen to the cozy bed! We especially appreciated the screened windows to keep the bugs away. The view of the mountains from the living room and bedroom windows was an amazing sight! We also appreciated the index card signs Audrey posted around the cottage that needed our attention, especially stepping in/out of the shower (thank you for that!). We loved the fire pit, which we used on our last night there. Breath taking night sky with the crackling sound of the wood fire burning..nothing can beat that! We didn't care so much for the WiFi since we did need to break away from the internet we use practically everyday..we got to spend more time with nature and each other's company, which was pretty much the reason for our anniversary trip. In taking care of the cottage, we took part in Recycling/Composting/Trashing stuff, which took some practicing initially since we don't normally do that back at home. Just be careful when taking out the recyclables and trash into the shed as we did encounter spiders and mosquitos. What also took a lot of practice was traveling in and out from the cottage..if you are traveling out to the town of Lyndon, be sure to stay on South Wheelock Road until you get to Memorial Drive..your GPS will send you to other streets which will leave you in other people's (URL HIDDEN) avoid Jill's Hill Road especially..Lastly, I don't suggest driving out late at night unless you got yourself a very good car, emergency essentials, and the courage as it gets pretty dark out there. Nonetheless, we were so happy to have stayed at Audrey's cottage! We loved Audrey! She was such a sweetheart. We really appreciated her checking in on us and making sure our needs were met. She even surprised us with a welcome basket filled with edible goodies, which is always a plus for us since we love food! The homemade skincare products were also very nice too! Audrey went above and beyond to making our stay so unforgettable. We highly recommend this cottage! Make Audrey your hostess! Treat yourself to peace and quiet there! You'll be happy that you did just like us!"

"Audrey was welcoming and friendly. She was very responsive and texted us back when we needed something. Her attention to details is impeccable. Upon arrival, we found a gift basket on the table which was nice. The place was clean and well-kept. There was no wi-fi internet access, but I was able to turn my cell phone into a mobile hotspot and connect that way. The location is private and remote -- perfect if you're looking to relax and unwind. We would definitely consider staying there again in the future."

Why no wi-fi?
We like to think of our space as the place to "disconnect" from the fast pace of life and reconnect with nature.

"A really great cozy cottage. The interior and the surrounding space is lovingly tended, and makes for a great space to spend a quiet weekend. There are so many nice personal touches as well--the greeting gift basket with VT-made noms was a treat. Same with many of the small notecards often supplying hints/tips. What's more, though it's very private, the town of Lyndon is still very accessible--so getting supplies is easy-peasy and convenient. The location is also a very good jumping off point if you're looking to spend time hiking in the area." (Boston, MA)

"We had a really wonderful stay at Audrey's. She greeted us when we arrive, went over a little bit about the property with us and left us to go discover the cabin. When we got to the cabin, we were greeted with a nice welcome basket with local soaps, syrup and foods. Her attention to detail is amazing - everything is well thought out, labeled and organized - you can tell the experience has been refined over the years based on feedback. I can't think of a thing I would change. In short, it was a great experience and wonderful weekend."

December 2015

"My Boyfriend and I LOVED our stay at The Wheelock Way! It was so peaceful, and relaxing. The two of us have high stress level careers; so we really wanted a sweet escape. We found our calm at the cottage. Quintin, Audrey's son, met us and handed us over the keys. During our stay he was very helpful and kind; he's a cool kid. Audrey left us the most awesome welcome basket! It was full of all local Vermont handmade goods; pretty much everything I was planning on buying myself. I LOVED 'Fire in the mountain' medium salsa that was included. Audrey is so thoughtful. She has fully equipped the cottage with everything you might need. Including two pairs of snowshoes that we used to go hiking up a trail she recommended to us, just two miles up the road. Talk about peaceful. The trees and the snow were out of a story book; unbelievable beauty. We also walked a trail on The Wheelock Way's property. Again, so calming with mini streams running along side or cross-crossing the trail we so dreamy. We loved our time so much, we actually extended it an extra night! The two of us wanted to ring in the new year in the peaceful haven. P.s. We slept with the curtains open every night, so we could wake up to the glistening snowy land and watch the snow fall."

October 2015

"This place is great! My girlfriend and I went here for her birthday, and couldn't have been more pleased. Very cozy, great views, and hosted by nice people. The gift basket is filled with goodies, and the walking paths out back are perfect to go for a stroll and see some foliage, mountains, nature, etc. Highly encourage anyone to stay here. Also, being close to Hill Farmstead isn't a bad thing!"

"My girlfriend and I stayed at the cottage for our anniversary and could not have asked for a better experience. Audrey had great recommendations for things to do around the area. In particular we were looking for suggestions for hiking. She recommended a trail a mile up the road from the cottage that led to a breathtaking view called Stannard Lookout. It was amazing! The cottage had everything we needed and even a little more including fresh Vermont ground coffee and a welcome basket with local products. We hope to be back!"

September 2014

"My girlfriend and I had one of the best weekends together; the hosts were extremely friendly and accommodating. The cottage was so cozy, cute, and had all of the ideal amenities that anyone could ask for. It was the perfect weekend getaway, endless trails to be in nature. Overall, it far exceeded my expectations. We'll definitely be back."

May 2014

"We rented the cottage for a quiet weekend. The cottage is perfect for a getaway from the city. We felt like home. Audrey was a great host. It was cleen, cozy and comfortable. All the equipment is new. We recommend it ! Petit chalet tranquille située à environ 20 minutes de Burke Mountain. Lors de notre prochaine sortie de vélo, nous envisagerons sérieusement la location de ce chalet très confortable."

Jay Jaramillo, Florida – Submitted on 2014/03/17 at 2:53 am:  "My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at this lovely cottage. It was a really nice get-a-way for both of us. The cottage was very lovely and had all we needed for our stay. The town’s of Lyndonville and St.Johnsbury were close enough that we could pick up a few grocery items and be on our way. My husband played a round of golf at the St. Johnsbury Country Club – what a beautiful golf course. We hated to leave the serenity of The Wheelock Way. We look forward to the next time we can stay at this lovely treasure."

The Airgoods, New Hampshire – Submitted on 6/25/14:  "My husband and I stayed at Wheelock Way and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The cottage has absolutely every amenity one could ever want.  It was impeccably clean and well situated in its own little wooded clearing on the property.  There is a seating area outside as well as a fire pit facing a gorgeous view of the mountains.  One morning when it snowed lightly, the road was plowed by the owners before we awoke and the front path shoveled.  A beautiful and thoughtfully arranged gift basket featuring Vermont specialties ranging from maple syrup, cookies, soaps, lotions and more was a welcome surprise upon our arrival.  The bedroom felt like something you’d expect at a boutique hotel.  There were cushy pillows and a duvet, reading lights as well as bedside tables, on each side of the bed and a flatscreen television.  Overall we just felt very pampered and cozy.  The heat worked well and we were toasty warm after a long day exploring.  A dining table, couch, desk area and very well stocked kitchen rounded out the main living space. The family who owns the property is attentive to guests needs without being overly so.  There were maps and booklets for touring the area and their knowledge and love of the Northeast Kingdom came through in our conversations.  They were a wealth of information and a pure delight.  My husband and I can’t wait to return to The Wheelock Way for more rest and relaxation in the beautiful woods of Vermont!!"

Katelyn L., Rhode Island submitted on-  7/9/14:  "Audrey was a great host- attentive to our needs, but not overly so. The cottage was wonderful and just as described- private and quiet with beautiful mountain views. The Kitchen was stocked with everything we could have needed, and everything was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. The fire pit and grill outside were a perfect addition. There was even a great gift basket full of local goodies that greeted us upon arrival. There is no internet, but cell reception is very good. If you have an iPhone, it can be turned into a hotspot and used with multiple devices. We could not have found a better place to relax for the weekend."
